With Liberty and Justice for Some
Acrylic on 36x48" canvas
I thought I knew about the "Central Park Five." How 5 black and brown teenager spent years in prison for a crime they did not commit. But then I watched "When They See Us" on Netflix and that story came to life. Watching Oprah's interview with those boys - now MEN - something changed in me. I want so badly to change things. I don't know how. But I know my privilege (my WHITE privilege) has to be utilized. And the only way I know how to do that is to create.
The price of this piece is obviously higher than my other work. But not because it took me a month to paint. It's because 100% of the proceeds will go to the Korey Wise Innocence Project. If i could sell it for $12 million I would - because I want to be able to give substantially. But my talent isn't there yet. So I landed on $1200 - $100 for each year that Korey Wise was wrongfully imprisoned.
